KLANG_KÖRPER_KUNST – performance with Markus Born and Piotr Tomczyk · Film 0:26 min

KLANG_KÖRPER_KUNST (sound – body – art) – this is the motto of my OPEN STUDIO on Saturday, 6 July, from 1 to 4 pm. After the competitions won and many successful events in the first half of the year, it is time to celebrate, and I am looking forward to very special hours together with you and the artists contributing to the programme in my rooms at Robert-Bosch-Straße 52 in Walldorf:

  • 1 to 4 pm Open Studio with exhibition and artist talk
  • 3 pm KLANG_KÖRPER_PERFORMANCE with Markus Born, Piotr Tomczyk and Stefanie Welk
  • 4.30 to 7.30 pm Expressive Arts Workshop with Nicki Koethner

For me, my wire sculptures are an expression of energy. The human form seems to emerge and dissolve at the same time. Its offshoots reach into space, create connections, signal openness. How would these forms sound if they were set vibrating?

There is hardly a more ideal partner to explore this question than Markus Born, musician, music producer and lecturer at the Popakademie in Mannheim. He is passionately dedicated to creating and exploring improvisational soundscapes in which otherwise inaudible vibrations can interact.

Together we began to experiment – and were thrilled by what we experienced. We explored how my sculptural works in steel turned into fascinating sounding bodies. Sounds and interferences unfolded that seemed archaic on the one hand and futuristic on the other, beyond music and melody.

No sooner had I posted a short video of it on Instagram than Piotr Tomczyk got in touch: “I want to dance when you do that!”

On Saturday, 6 July, the time has come. At 2 pm Markus and I will use some of my sculptures to create a space of sound that can induce trance-like states. Markus interacts with and supports the amorphous sounds with modern electronic equipment and impulses from his electric guitar. The performance artist Piotr Tomczyk, well known far beyond Karlsruhe, will interpret the sounds in dance.

During my Rotary cultural scholarship at the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2001, I met the art therapist Nicki Koethner. Since then she has visited me whenever she comes to Germany. I am especially delighted that this year she is offering a workshop on my Open Studio day that takes up the theme of our performance so aptly.

Like the steel sculptures, we humans also have inner sounds that are set off by external events. To perceive this inner sound we do not need sensitive microphones; we can use all forms of artistic expression. Writing, working with clay, singing, dancing, moving. Nicki Koethner creates a space of experience for the creativity that is available in each of us as a creative force, bringing us back into harmony with our inner being. The workshop language is German.
