Each work tells of inner movement – of breaking open, letting go, transforming. Light falls through the open structures, casts shadows on the wall and lets the figure appear differently from every point of view. In this way, these wire and steel sculptures transform the space they inhabit – be it a home, a collection, an office or a practice. Click on an image to enlarge it.

A human figure of welded steel bands winds its way out of a three-metre-high, free-standing steel structure; it develops its lively expression in the tension with the solid-looking wall of Corten steel.

Piano strings emerge from the opened grand piano like visible paths of sound. What normally remains hidden inside the soundboard steps out into space: vibration, tension, movement. For this installation at Heidelberg University, Stefanie Welk let strings float in the air; they overlap, bundle and open up again – like sine waves, like a drawing made of sound in the air. The piano remains origin and store, but the sound becomes a spatial line, an energetic trace.
Created in 2007, the installation makes invisible forces visible. Between materiality and immateriality, a field of fragile order, movement and light emerges.
