Public Space

Since 2004 Stefanie Welk has increasingly devoted herself to public space. Commissions and art competitions won have led to numerous large-scale sculptures that correspond with the light by day and by night – examples of art in architecture in Baden-Württemberg and throughout Germany.

CALLING FOR PEACE – stainless steel sculpture by sculptor Stefanie Welk, Art in public space, Rosenanlage / Freudenbergstraße, Weinheim

2026 · Rosenanlage / Freudenbergstraße, Weinheim

CALLING FOR PEACE

The design for this work was awarded 1st prize in the Bürgerstiftung Weinheim art competition for a work of public art. Since October 2026 the sculpture has stood in the Rosenanlage / Freudenbergstrasse in Weinheim, as the starting point of a “Path of Remembrance”.

What does peace really mean? What does a peaceful world look like? What kind of world do we want to live in? School students from Weinheim explored these questions in class together with their teachers. Their texts, poems and statements became bands of stainless steel letters that form a seemingly floating sphere.

The open sphere is visible from all sides. As viewers walk around it, the messages of peace gradually reveal themselves. They experience how words and fragments of text touch, enter into dialogue with one another and form a fabric like a manifesto directed towards the future.

IMPACT – stainless steel sculpture by sculptor Stefanie Welk, Art in architecture, Transmission Electron Microscopy Centre, TU Chemnitz

2025 · Transmission Electron Microscopy Centre, TU Chemnitz

IMPACT

1st prize in the art-in-architecture competition held by the Saxon State Office for Real Estate and Construction Management (SIB).

Crystal structures in metals are never perfect. Yet apparent defects such as dislocations and irregularities increase the stability of a material. The sculpture IMPACT takes up this idea artistically. Stainless steel tubes of different lengths, welded together at irregular angles, combine to form an imaginary cone, open at the top and tilted at an angle, whose tip seems to bore into the ground.

The focus of the cone downwards and into the massive base suggests the line of sight of an electron microscope “zooming” deep into matter. The form is equally symbolic of the focused optical beam and of the inquiring mind striving for depth. The empty space enclosed by the cone underlines the significance of the space between quantum particles and of emptiness as an essential part of every form and of all material.

MOMENTUM – steel sculpture by sculptor Stefanie Welk, Art in architecture, WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management, Düsseldorf

2022 · WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management, Düsseldorf

MOMENTUM

The characteristic geometric clarity and transparency of the converted hall of the Otto Beisheim School of Management were the starting point for the design of a steel sculpture.

The core values and visions of one of Germany's most renowned business schools – passion, innovation, courage and commitment – were to be incorporated and united in a work of art.

Curved lines and openness contrast with the right-angled concrete structure at the centre of the hall. Here, centred and yet full of dynamism, a figure moves with a powerful step forward into an uncertain future – floating, at the same time grounded and in balance. Balance as a state of the moment, which demands absolute presence, becomes a symbol of the fact that the future can only emerge from, and be shaped by, the present.

WASSERLÄUFER – wire sculpture by sculptor Stefanie Welk, Art in public space, Luisenpark Mannheim

2017 · Luisenpark Mannheim,

WASSERLÄUFER

Since 2017 the transparent work WASSERLÄUFER (Water Runner) has been positioned on the water-lily pond in Mannheim's Luisenpark. On the surface of the water the figure enters into a direct dialogue with its surroundings. Reflections, light and the gentle movement of the water become part of the work and make the boundaries between art and landscape permeable.

The ibex – a landmark and the heraldic animal of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. Like fleeting brushstrokes dashed off in space, the 3 m high construction of laser-cut stainless steel plates appears. Since 2013 the ibex has been mounted on the roof of the Aschera-Park in Schiers, Switzerland.

TIMELINES

TIMELINES is a 25-metre-long, site-specific installation of steel wire for Nedschroef Holding in Belgium. The work links historical milestones of technological development with important events in the company's history. The linear spatial drawing accompanies the viewer along the architecture and lets the narrative unfold step by step. Time becomes tangible as a spatial connection between history, identity and future.

SPHERA – wire sculpture by sculptor Stefanie Welk, Art in public space, City of Weinheim

2022 · City of Weinheim

SPHERA

Since 2022 the 3 m high sculpture has defined the newly designed square above St. Peter's Church at the Old Cemetery in Weinheim. It is a gift from the Bürgerstiftung Weinheim (citizens' foundation) to the people of the town.

Stefanie Welk drew inspiration for her work from the site, located at the intersection of modern urban life and historical roots.

“In the sphere everything is connected. It symbolises the non-visible, the spiritual behind the visible world, and invites us not only to look, but also to feel the energies in which the different spheres resonate with one another.”

The sphere, drawn three-dimensionally in taut lines of steel wire, is held by a steel plate folded at an acute angle. The tip of this steel angle, whose cut-out echoes the form of the sphere, points north towards St. Peter's Church. The supporting form made of Corten steel embodies the earthly. Its contrast with the fine lines of the sphere, which catch and reflect the light, intensifies over time as the surface oxidises.

HUMMELFLUG

For the Brand Group, the installation HUMMELFLUG (Flight of the Bumblebee) was created in 1996 in front of the main building at the company's headquarters in Anröchte. The industrial product is released from its functional context and becomes a lively, dynamic image: it flies out into the world, as it were. HUMMELFLUG links the company's identity with playful lightness, movement and new beginnings – and translates a technical product into a poetic metaphor visible from afar.

KLANGRAUM – sculpture by sculptor Stefanie Welk, Art in public space, Heidelberg University

1999 · Heidelberg University

KLANGRAUM

Piano strings emerge from the opened grand piano like visible paths of sound. What normally remains hidden inside the soundboard steps out into space: vibration, tension, movement. For this installation at Heidelberg University, Stefanie Welk let strings float in the air; they overlap, bundle and open up again – like sine waves, like a drawing made of sound in the air. The piano remains origin and store, but the sound becomes a spatial line, an energetic trace.

Created in 2007, the installation makes invisible forces visible. Between materiality and immateriality, a field of fragile order, movement and light emerges.
