You won't be able to resist

30 March 2018Work and process

Anyone with even a spark of curiosity has to reach out, touch the massive steel elements and marvel. Once you have started, you can't stop. How lightly they swing! How they sway or oscillate, how they tip forward and back. Every “Moving Sculpture” has its own way of moving. And that is why I couldn't resist either, and set well over 60 works swinging in Jürgen's studio. Now I am looking forward to a fine selection of these works being on view in our joint exhibition “Dynamische Positionen” (Dynamic Positions) in my studio on 7 and 8 April 2018.

Jürgen Heinz is a metal sculptor. He works with the same material as I do, and our common theme is inner movement and the driving forces. While with him clear, massive bodies are set in motion, my figures are static but dissolve into lines that symbolise less the contour than the flow of inner energy. With me the mass falls away and what remains is solidified movement. With him everything is concentrated in the mass, which itself begins to move. My work “Embrace” and Jürgen's “Stele of Friendship” are examples of our different forms of expression and stood at the beginning of our joint exhibition project.

It was the end of June last year. For two weeks I closed my studio and went to Hemsbach on the Wiesensee to work in the open air. The support association KunstPlatz had invited artists to a symposium. Jürgen had also accepted the invitation, and so we worked side by side for two weeks, exchanged ideas about art and the world, and decided: let's do something together.
We stayed in touch and in motion, and did not leave it at fine words. We called our two studio exhibitions “Dynamische Positionen” (Dynamic Positions). Part I can be seen on 7 and 8 April in my studio at Güterhallenstraße 3 in Mannheim harbour, Part II on 22 and 23 September in Jürgen's studio in Lorsch. And if you come, you too won't be able to keep your fingers off Jürgen's art. Promise.
